Gas appliance safety
Gas appliances should be properly maintained to help keep you and your household safe. Find out how to use and look after your appliances safely, and recognise the warning signs that something may be wrong.
Did you know that faulty appliances can give off warning signs of carbon monoxide being present in your home?
Along with a CO alarm, you should look out for the following signals that there may be something wrong.
If you notice any of these signs, arrange for the appliance to be checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Visit their website or call 0800 408 5500.
-
Yellow or orange lazy flames.
-
Soot or yellow-brown staining around an appliance.
-
Excessive condensation on windows in the room where the appliance is located.
-
Pilot lights that frequently blow out.
If you have a gas boiler you should have it checked by a Gas Safe Registered engineer once a year. They are also on hand to help if you have any concerns with your gas appliances throughout the year.
For more information, or to find an engineer near you, visit gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.
Always look out for the yellow triangle.
Keep yourself and your loved ones protected. Here are five simple safety steps to keep your home safe:
-
Fit an audible CO alarm in rooms where there are fuel-burning appliances.
-
Have gas appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every year.
-
Never block vents, chimneys, flues or air bricks.
-
Be gas safe and carbon monoxide aware if you’re carrying out home improvements. If fireplaces, flues or chimneys are altered, make sure work is completed by a Gas Safe engineer, and they remain safe and correctly ventilated.
