Prepare today, Safer tomorrow.
Everything you need to know

Explore our practical advice and useful information to help you spot potential risks, take preventative action and make informed decisions about your home.

From understanding the signs of carbon monoxide to improving energy efficiency and keeping your boiler working safely and reliably, you’ll find guidance to help you feel informed and prepared.

Keep your gas appliances safe and serviced

An annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer is essential for all gas appliances in your property.

It will help keep your heating and hot water working safely and reliably – and everyday life running smoothly.

Never attempt any DIY servicing, as this will put your household at risk.

Be carbon monoxide aware

You can’t see, smell or taste carbon monoxide – and it is very poisonous.

Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, collapse and unconsciousness.

Protect the people you love.  Invest in a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly.

Smell gas?

If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

My boiler isn't working and it's winter time

If your boiler has stopped working and its winter time, make sure you check existing external pipe insulation (where it’s visible) to make sure it’s in good condition. If your pipes have frozen, our simple guide could help you get your boiler back up and running again.

Energy-saving tips

Simple changes around the home could help reduce your energy use and lower your bills.

Smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide (CO)?

Time to act fast. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. Open  doors and windows to ventilate the property and turn off all gas appliances.

If instructed to do so, shut off the emergency control valve at the meter (turn the lever 90 degrees so that it sits across the pipe). Put out any naked flames, and don’t smoke, vape, strike any matches or turn any electrical switches on or off or use any appliances that could cause a spark.   It’s important to get everyone away from the area and move outside if you can.

If the gas leak is in a cellar or basement, do not enter and instead evacuate the property.

Investing in your local gas network

We invest in the gas network beneath your feet to help keep your gas supply safe and reliable, today and in the future.

While out of sight under roads and pavements, our pipe network plays a vital role delivering gas to 2.9 million homes and businesses every day.

We continually invest in upgrading and maintaining our network.  By renewing ageing pipes, we keep the gas flowing safely while reducing the risk of future disruption.

We invest in flood protection and monitor critical equipment around the clock to help keep your gas supplies flowing.

We use helicopters to inspect our network of high-pressure pipelines. These checks help inform our maintenance and future investment plans.
