Hydrogen
With 85% of UK homes connected to the natural gas network, we know the way we heat our homes and keep industry powered has to change by 2050.
Unlike methane, hydrogen doesn’t release carbon emissions when burned, making it a cleaner alternative gas that has potential be used in a broad range of applications, including heat, transport and power.
It’s also not a new concept. Up until the 1960s, around 50% of ‘town gas’ made from coal was hydrogen, and transported through the UK gas network.
We’ve been working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the energy regulator Ofgem, the UK government and our fellow gas distribution networks to build the evidence supporting how repurposing gas infrastructure to transport hydrogen can play a key role in decarbonising these sectors.
H21
Our pioneering H21 programme incorporated a suite of projects focused on demonstrating how the existing gas network could be repurposed to safely carry 100% hydrogen to homes and businesses.
With H21 completed, our programme of work has evolved to focus on our industrial customer base and how we can continue to provide a resilient energy supply via our East Coast Hydrogen project.
You can download the H21 reports from the Future section of our Documents Library.
East Coast Hydrogen
East Coast Hydrogen aims to develop a scheme of work to repurpose parts of our existing infrastructure connecting our industrial clusters to a wider industrial base to support their decarbonisation ambitions. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with National Gas and Cadent.
You can learn more about hydrogen on the NGN network and how we’re supporting producers to get connected.
