Biomethane
Our gas network is already carrying locally produced green gas to domestic homes, supplying around 60,000 homes in our region and 650,000 heated by biomethane nationwide.
Biomethane production
Biomethane is a homegrown gas created from organic matter such as food waste, farm products and sewage.
When this matter breaks down it emits a gas that can be captured, stored and injected into the gas network as a substitute for fossil fuels, and used in boilers and gas appliances in exactly the same way as natural gas.
As well as diversifying the UK’s renewable energy mix, biomethane also provides greater resilience and energy security on the road to net zero.
The Green Gas Taskforce
The Green Gas Taskforce collaboration was established earlier this year.
It brings together ten of the country’s largest biomethane generators, shippers and traders, the five UK gas networks, and four industry groups.
The Taskforce will deliver a series of reports and analysis to define the scope for growth of biomethane and the vital contribution it can make to the decarbonisation of home heating and industry, and to UK energy security.
