Blended hydrogen
By blending a percentage of hydrogen into the natural gas network, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions, boost hydrogen production and support decarbonisation of our energy system.
HyDeploy
Carried out in partnership with Cadent Gas and Keele University, the HyDeploy project proved domestic boilers can be safely operated with a hydrogen blend of up to 20% by vol., without any changes to appliances or how we use boilers in our homes.
Through two successful pioneering demonstrations, firstly on a private network at Keele University’s campus and then 677 homes on the NGN network at Winlaton near Gateshead, HyDeploy proved this blended gas could be used safely without disruption to customers or changes in the property.
The safety and technical evidence is now with the HSE for review.
Blending implementation programme
Additional work will be necessary to develop evidence and inform the requirements of the gas transporter safety case.
As part of this, gas networks are undertaking the Blending Implementation Programme to identify necessary changes to gas markets frameworks.
