Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, has begun essential work in Kirkstall, Leeds to replace the ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes.
This work, which is expected to take 32 weeks to complete, will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.
The first phase of the project is currently underway on Morris Lane and will then move to Abbey Road and the Norman Estate and is expected to continue until December.
Working closely with Leeds City Council, NGN has carefully planned the project in rolling phases to keep disruption to a minimum and minimise the impact on the local area.
Work Details
To allow engineers to work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be in place.
Work on Morris Lane will be carried out under two-way temporary traffic lights, operating between 9am and 3pm where possible, to avoid peak traffic periods. The lights will be staffed during busy periods to minimise disruption, with advance warning signs in place for road users. Full pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
From Monday 5 October, work will begin on Abbey Road and within the Norman Estate. On Abbey Road, work will be carried out in the footway and cycle lane, while activity within the Norman Estate will take place on Delacey Mount, Back Norman Mount and Norman Grove.
At certain stages, temporary junction closures may be needed, restricting access from Abbey Road into the Norman Estate. Access to these streets will remain available from Morris Lane.
Chris Reed, Operations Manager at Northern Gas Networks said: “This essential investment will replace ageing metal pipes and help keep gas supplies safe and reliable for homes and businesses in the area for years to come. We have worked closely with Leeds City Council to plan the work and minimise disruption wherever possible. We understand that roadworks can be inconvenient and are sorry for the disruption they may cause. We are grateful for everyone’s patience and support while our teams work to complete the project as safely and efficiently as possible.”
