Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work in Norton to replace the ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes.
The work, which began on Monday 21 September, will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.
The project, which is expected to take 17 weeks to complete, has been planned in collaboration with North Yorkshire Council.
Engineers are working hard to complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible and re-opened Church Street on Friday 25 September.
Work is now continuing along Welham Road. From the morning of Wednesday 30 September, the existing one-way road closure will be extended to the Springfield Garth junction for approximately two weeks. Drivers travelling towards Malton from the Stamford Bridge direction will not be able to continue past Lidl and must follow the clearly signposted diversion via Langton. Traffic travelling along Welham Road from the Malton direction will not be affected.
Additional signs will be installed at each junction, including signs to discourage drivers from using Whitewall and Bazeley’s Lane. Once this section is complete, multi-way temporary traffic lights will be introduced on Welham Road and will remain as work progresses.
Access is being maintained for residents throughout the project and shops and businesses are open as usual.
Stewart Whitehead, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’re pleased to have reopened Church Street and thank residents and businesses for their patience while we completed this phase of our essential work.
“Due to the location of the railway, to enable our essential work to proceed safely, it has been necessary to extend the road closure on Welham Road to the Springfield Garth junction for approximately two weeks. We recognise that the extended diversion will mean some journeys take longer and customers should allow extra time to travel and follow the signed diversion via Langton rather than using Whitewall or Bazeley’s Lane.
“Following the traffic management in place is essential to protect residents, road users and our teams while we complete this work and secure a safe, reliable gas supply for Norton for years to come.”
