Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Forest Hall, North Tyneside.
Ageing metal pipework in Great Lime Road, Benton Lane, Glebe Road and several adjoining streets is being replaced with more durable plastic pipes, helping to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply for the local community for years to come.
The work, which began on 5 October 2026 is expected to take 18 weeks to complete, and has been carefully planned in collaboration with North Tyneside Council.
So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, temporary traffic lights will be in place on Glebe Road, at its junction with Great Lime Road, from 5 October for six weeks. The lights will move along the route as work progresses, including onto Benton Road at a later stage.
The traffic signals will be staffed at peak times to help keep traffic moving. Any bus stops that require suspending will be replaced with temporary bus stops whilst the work is carried out.
Access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
Dan Hind, Operations Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “This essential investment will help keep gas supplies safe and reliable for homes and businesses across Forest Hall for many years to come.
“We understand that work of this scale can affect daily journeys and routines, and we appreciate the patience of residents, local businesses and road users while it is under way.
We will work as safely and efficiently as possible to minimise disruption and complete the upgrade as quickly as we can.”
