Planet
Through our People and Planet Strategy, we are working to reduce our environmental impact and support a cleaner, greener future, while helping enable a fair and affordable transition to lower carbon energy.
Our four Planet commitments set out how we will take action to address climate change, use resources responsibly and care for the natural environment across the region we serve:
-
Enable affordable, decarbonised energy
-
Produce less waste and recycle it all
-
Eliminate air pollutant emissions and reach Net Zero by 2050
-
Manage our land to benefit the environment
This page provides more information on each commitment.
Enabling affordable, decarbonised energy
We’re already integrating low carbon energy sources into our gas network, helping biomethane producers to inject green gas into our pipes.
Our East Coast Hydrogen programme is driving forward decarbonisation of vital industry in our region by connecting planned hydrogen production and storage with industrial users.
Our Net Zero Educators raise awareness of decarbonised energy and Net Zero, sparking interest in the energy sector, and building STEM skills in young people – especially young girls. Each year we deliver hundreds of educational sessions, reaching many thousands of young people.
Reducing waste and recycling more
We are committed to reducing waste across our operations and finding more sustainable ways of working. Through initiatives such as reducing paper use, avoiding single use plastics and improving resource efficiency, we continue to minimise the waste generated from our offices, depots and activities.
Where waste is produced, we work to maximise reuse and recycling and ensure materials are managed responsibly. We are also focused on reducing our use of virgin materials by increasing the use of recycled and lower impact alternatives, including in the reinstatement of our street works.
This approach helps us conserve natural resources, reduce environmental impacts and support a more circular economy.
As part of our commitment to Net Zero, we are striving to decarbonise all aspects of our business.
Gas leakage makes up approximately 90% of our greenhouse gas emissions. We work hard every day to reduce these emissions by responding quickly to gas emergencies and targeted through investment in our infrastructure.
Our company car fleet is now 100% electric or hybrid and in 2025 we deployed our first batch of electric vans.
Our offices, depots and infrastructure sites are powered by 100% renewable electricity from our own roof-top solar panels and consciously purchased from the grid. In 2025, we switched the gas supply to our offices and depots from natural gas to certified low carbon biomethane.
We’re creating hundreds of homes for nature on our infrastructure sites to encourage biodiversity and help wildlife to thrive.
Since 2013 we’ve decontaminated, dismantled and removed 47 of our gas holders, giant structures that are no longer needed for the modern day gas network to operate effectively.
Between 2021 and 2026 our shareholders funded the planting of over 50,000 trees in urban areas of our region to help create happier and healthier communities.
