This is What a Gas Engineer Looks Like

For too long, people have had a fixed idea of what a gas engineer looks like, and who these careers are for.

We’re here to challenge that.

At Northern Gas Networks, we know talent doesn’t come in one shape, background or pathway. You don’t need to have grown up around engineering. You don’t need experience. And you definitely don’t need to “fit the mould” to belong here.

What matters is your potential, your curiosity, your willingness to learn, and your drive to build something for yourself.

Today, our apprentices come from all walks of life, bringing different perspectives, experiences and strengths into the role. We’re proud to be creating more opportunities for women to build careers in engineering, and to show that these roles are open to everyone.

Because the Truth is:
  • You don’t need to be “technical enough”. We’ll teach you.

  • You don’t need to be “strong enough”. Skill and technique matter more.

  • You don’t need to have done it before. You just need to start.

Breaking Barriers, Building Confidence

Starting something new can feel daunting. Especially if you’ve never seen yourself in that kind of role before.

That’s why our apprenticeships are designed to support you every step of the way.

From day one, you’ll be part of a team that invests in your growth, helping you build confidence, develop new skills and realise what you’re capable of.

Many of our apprentices once felt the same uncertainty. Now, they’re thriving in careers they never thought possible.

No, you don’t need any previous experience to apply.

  • What qualifications do I need?

Entry requirements will vary depending on the role, but typically you’ll need a minimum level of GCSEs (or equivalent), which can include Maths, English and a Science.

Full details will be listed on each apprenticeship vacancy, so you can check exactly what’s required before applying.

  • What is a gas apprentice and what do they do?

A gas apprentice works as part of a team to help maintain and operate the gas network that keeps homes and businesses safe and connected.

You’ll learn practical skills such as installing and repairing gas infrastructure, working safely on site, and responding to real-world challenges, all while gaining recognised qualifications.

  • How long does an apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeship schemes can vary in length depending on the role, but most programmes run for either 2 to 4 years.

During that time, you’ll gain experience, complete your training and work towards becoming fully qualified in your chosen field.

  • Will I get paid as an apprentice?

You’ll earn a salary from day one, while also gaining valuable skills and qualifications. It’s a great way to build your career without taking on student debt.

  • Will I be supported throughout the apprenticeship?

  • Is this career right for me if I’ve never considered engineering before?

Yes, and you wouldn’t be alone.

Many of our apprentices had never considered a career in engineering before applying. If you’re curious, motivated and open to learning something new, an apprenticeship could be the perfect place to start.

  • Do I need to be technical or ‘hands-on’ to apply?

    Not at all.

You don’t need to already have technical knowledge. That’s what the training is for. What matters most is your willingness to learn and your attitude towards developing new skills.

  • Are apprenticeships open to everyone?

Yes, our apprenticeships are open to everyone over the age of 18.

We’re committed to creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds and encouraging more diversity in engineering, including supporting more women into apprenticeships and technical roles.
