Project update
12 March 2026, 12:16am

This upgrade project involves a combination of what is known as ‘mains insertion’ and ‘open cut’.

In the area of the B6263 and Wetheral Pastures, we’re busy cutting open sections of the B6263 to increase the diameter of our gas pipe, to ensure we continue to keep customers in the area safe, warm and connected.

When planning began for this work last year, we worked very closely with various key stakeholders to minimise disruption to local residents and motorists.

We have collaborated with…

  • Cumberland Council, who have arranged full road resurfacing works in the area to coincide with our work and minimise disruption to customers. Cumberland Council have also carried out repairs to a bridge and nearby drains
  • Network Rail as the work is close to a railway line and railway bridges
  • Shell and National Gas as their assets are along the work route
  • Streetwise, who provided advanced signage in the area and the nearby M6 to give customers and motorists advanced notice of the works
  • Local councillors and MPs including Julie Minns, MP for Carlisle, who recently visited the site to discuss the work with Northern Gas Networks colleagues

Gas supplies to homes and businesses in the area will not be affected.

We’ll be providing updates on the work on this page. For further information about the work please contact our Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 and select option 4 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
