Drivers in Shipley are being warned to expect delays in Shipley, as Northern Gas Networks (NGN) engineers investigate a gas leak on Leeds Road.

For safety reasons, engineers have installed temporary two-way lights at Low Well, which are expected to remain in place for several days.

NGN, the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential repairs following reports of a gas leak in the area earlier this week.

Matt Judge, Emergency Repairs Site Manager for NGN, said: “Leeds Road is a busy main road and we realise that this work may cause delays. We’re doing everything we can to work as efficiently as possible to keep traffic moving until we can return things to normal. We’ll be working through the weekend and the traffic lights will be manned every day from 7am to 7pm to keep the traffic flowing.

“Unfortunately, the gas leak appears to be in the roadway so the only way to find and repair it quickly and safely is to use temporary traffic lights. If it’s possible for people, we are advising them to find alternative routes if they possibly can, or allow extra time for their journey. We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but we appreciate the public bearing with us while we carry out this essential safety work.”

Electronic road signs will also be in use to keep road users up-to-date and updates will be posted on the NGN website and social media channels.

NGN workers will be adhering to Government guidance for safe distance working and following health and safety guidance.

Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
