Loss of supply: Meadowcroft Road, Middlesbrough
18 October 2026, 8:50pm

Engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) have been working tirelessly to restore normal service to 63 properties in Meadowcroft Road,  Hazelwood Gardens and Skippers Lane, Middlesbrough (TS6), after water entered the gas mains on Saturday 17 October.

NGN engineers have been working throughout the weekend to identify the cause of the water ingress and support affected customers. Gas supplies have been switched back on to the majority of homes this evening (Sunday 18 October) and teams remain on site working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Steve Pigott, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’ve made good progress today and have been able to restore supplies to all properties where we’ve been able to gain access. Water is continuing to be pumped from the mains and work to identify the cause of the water ingress is ongoing.

“Engineers have spent the evening going door-to-door visiting customers to safely restore supplies to individual properties at the meter. If you weren’t available when we called, you’ll find a card with our details so that you can get in touch to arrange for an engineer to come straight out. We’d like to again thank local residents for bearing with us.”

Electric hot plates and heaters are still available from the team on site in Meadowcroft Road for customers without gas.  Shower facilities are available for anyone without supply from Eston Leisure Centre on Normanby Road which reopens at 6.30am on Monday 19 October.

Customers with questions or concerns can contact NGN’s Customer Care team by calling 0800 040 7766 and selecting Option 4 or emailing [email protected].

Customers have been provided with heaters and hot plates while they are without gas with NGN prioritising vulnerable customers.

Investigations have found the loss of supply is due to water getting into the gas mains. Work is continuing today to locate the entry point and remove water from the pipes.

NGN teams continue to provide help and support to customers while they work to resolve the issue and safely restore gas supplies.

Steve Pigott, NGN Business Operations Lead, said: “We’d like to thank customers for their patience and cooperation while work is ongoing to identify the source of the leak, remove water and safely restore supplies to affected properties.

All our engineers carry a photo ID card.  Please ask to see this before letting anyone in.

You should check:

  • The photo matches the person at your door
  • The name is clearly shown
  • The card displays the Northern Gas Networks logo

You are entitled to hold the card and inspect it carefully.

If you have any doubt, do not allow entry. Instead:

  • Ask the engineer to wait outside
  • Call Northern Gas Networks Customer Care team on 0800 040 7766, explain that someone claiming to be from Northern Gas Networks is at your address and ask them to verify the engineers identity. This number operates 24/7.

No one wants to be without heating, hot water or the ability to cook and we’ll do everything to get your gas back on as quickly as possible.

We will provide electrical heaters and hot plates for those who need them most while the gas is turned off.

To stay warm while your gas is off:

  • Wear thermal base layers if you have them, and layer sweaters, fleeces and hats to trap air.
  • Keep your feet warm with thick socks
  • Wear gloves and use hand warmers and tuck into gloves or shoes
  • Close curtains at night to help insulate your rooms
  • Stay in one room if you can, and close doors to other unused areas to concentrate warmth

If you have a disability or illness which means you might struggle without your gas supply, even for a few hours, it’s a good idea to get added to your gas supplier’s Priority Services Register (PSR).

If you’ve got an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or relative who you think might benefit from this service, please make them aware of it too.

Find more information on the Priority Services Register, including how to sign up.

The use of electrical heaters and hotplates will increase demand on your local electricity network.

The electricity network is designed to deliver the amount of power customers normally use over a course of a day, however any exceptionally high demand for power as a result of many additional heaters being used continuously, could have an impact.

If the electricity network is significantly overloaded it could cause damage and result in a power cut for you and your neighbours which may take some time to repair.

To help reduce the risk of this happening, particularly at a time when our customers are also temporarily without gas, please ensure you:

  • Minimise the use of appliances and switch off or unplug any electrical equipment that you do not need and heat only essential rooms,
  • Stagger the use of high-demand electrical appliances such as cookers, heaters, kettles, immersion heaters, electric showers, dishwashers, tumble driers and washing machines.

If you do have a power cut, regardless of who you choose to buy your electricity from you, please contact your local electricity distribution company.  They are available 24-hours a day by calling 105, the free power cut line, or visiting www.powercut105.com

If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide poisoning you must follow these steps:

  1. Call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999 – the service is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  2. Put out any naked flames, and don’t smoke or strike any matches.
  3. Turn off all your gas appliances and don’t use them until they’re checked by an engineer.
  4. Turn off your electrical appliances, and avoid turning any switches on or off.
  5. Open your doors and windows.
  6. Keep other people away from the area.
