Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is to carry out essential work in Wakefield to replace the ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes.

This work will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Wakefield, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.

The project, which is expected to last around 4 weeks, has been planned in collaboration with Wakefield Council. So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be put in place.

From Monday 31 March, for around 2 weeks, there will be a lane closure on Woodthorpe Lane at the junction of Barnsley Road. Vehicles will not be able to travel from Barnsley Road onto Woodthorpe Lane; they will be able to travel from Woodthorpe Lane onto Barnsley Road. This lane closure will then be lifted for the remainder of the works.

This work will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Bingley, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.

The project, which is expected to last across three weekends, has been planned in collaboration with Bradford Council. So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be put in place.

From Friday 28 March, there will be road closures on Micklethwaite Lane and Carr Lane in Bingley on 28-30 March, 4-6 April and 11-13 April. A signed diversion will be in place for motorists, and access will be maintained where possible.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out repair work on gas pipes under Charlestown Road in Halifax.

This work will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Halifax, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.

The project, which is expected to last for a maximum of 2 weeks, has been planned in collaboration with Calderdale Council. So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be put in place.

From Monday 24 March, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Charlestown Road, between Cemex Concrete Plant and the retail park. These lights will be manned 7am – 7pm Monday to Friday, and 8am – 5pm Saturdays and Sundays to help the flow of traffic.

However, it’s vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Halifax.”

From Monday 24 March, 3-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Calvert Lane. This is the first phase of a project which will involve closing part of Anlaby Road later in the year – we will provide further information on this in due course.

From Monday 17 March, temporary traffic lights are in place on Wakefield Road/A645, starting at the junction of Lynwood Close, then moving east along Wakefield Road/A645 towards Featherstone for the duration of the project.

Gas mains improvement work underway – Wrenthorpe Road, Wakefield

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to upgrade gas pipes under Wrenthorpe Road in Wakefield.

The work, which is being carried out to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses in Wakefield, began on 24 February 2025 and is ongoing.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, some temporary traffic management measures have been put in place.  This includes installing two sets of temporary three-way traffic lights on Wrenthorpe Road, including one set at the junction with Silcoates Lane.

The temporary traffic lights are being manned during peak travel times to try to ease congestion.

Daniel Grimshaw, Site Manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Our teams are working hard to replace the ageing gas main on Wrenthorpe Road.  We’re making good progress but this is a  technically complex job, so we do expect it to continue for another few weeks.

“We recognise that our work is causing some delays to travel in the area, and we’d like to reassure people that we’re doing everything we can to minimise the disruption to people’s journeys and apologise for any inconvenience caused.  We’ll continue to share updates on our progress on our website, X and Facebook.”

Northern Gas Networks is advising road users in the area to allow more time to travel, particularly during peak travel periods.

The gas supply to homes and businesses in the area will not be affected.

The project, which is expected to last around 8 weeks, has been planned in collaboration with Bradford Council. So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be put in place.

From Monday 24 March, there will be temporary traffic lights in place at the junction of Keighley Road and Goose Cote Lane. Once this phase of work has been completed, the lights will move west along Keighley Road towards Oakworth for the rest of the project. These lights will be manned at peak times to help with the flow of traffic.

From Monday 19 May, there will be a road closure on Lark Street, Oakworth, Keighley, for the rest of the work. A signed diversion will be in place for motorists, and access will be maintained where possible.

This work will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Bradford, keeping homes and businesses safe, warm and connected.

The project, which is expected to last around six weeks, has been planned in collaboration with Bradford Council. So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management measures will be put in place.

From Monday 24 March, there will be a road closure on Fleece Street, off Halifax Road, for around two weeks. There will also be temporary traffic lights in place on Halifax Road outside the Tesco Superstore. Once the first phase of the work has been completed, the lights will move east towards Buttershaw Lane. Throughout the work, these lights will be manned from 7am-7pm to help traffic flow.

From Tuesday 22 April, the junction of Buttershaw Lane and Halifax Road will be closed for around two weeks. A signed diversion will be in place for motorists, and access will be maintained where possible.

From Monday 17 March, there will be temporary traffic lights in place on Stockton Road roundabout and a closure of the Caledonian Road junction on Stockton Road. During the work, these temporary lights will move down Stockton Road. Once the work reaches the junction of the A689 and Loyalty Road, there will be a lane closure in place, which is expected to last around two weeks.
