Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in York.

The pipework is being diverted out of the old Gas yard as a part of the new housing development, and NGN is also replacing the old metallic pipes to further improve the integrity of the city’s network for years to come.

The eight-week project began on Monday 6th June, having been planned in collaboration with City of York Council.

During this first phase, engineers identified a gas escape on the adjacent lane of the carriageway that now requires urgent repair.

To safely carry out this repair will require the introduction of new traffic management measures, and the project’s completion date to be extended to August 26th.

From Friday 24th June, the temporary four-way traffic lights on Layerthorpe will be removed and a road closure introduced outbound on Layerthorpe from Sunday 26th June for two weeks.

This will be followed by four-way temporary lights on Heworth Green/Eboracum Way from Monday 25th July for three weeks on Heworth Green/Eboracum Way.

Russ Kaye, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of York.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

For further information about the work please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
