Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to replace the ageing metal pipework around Beverley Minster.

This is to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Beverley for decades to come, while also getting the network ready to transport alternative green fuels such as hydrogen in the future.

All work has been planned in close collaboration with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Humber Archaeology Partnership.

The project will start on Monday 21 February on Minster Moorgate, where teams will begin working from the junction at Lairgate towards the Minster.

Work will continue around the Minster for the following ten weeks and the project is expected to complete by the end of April 2022.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, it will be necessary to introduce road closures at various stages throughout the project.

Access will be maintained for residents.

Road closures will be placed on the following streets during the dates indicated:

Minster Moorgate:  21 February – 4 April

St John Street: 14 March – 1 April

Minster Yard North: 21 March – 8 April

Highgate: 28 March – 29 April

Minster Yard South:  4 April – 22 April

Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place.

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

NGN’s Customer Care Team will also be keeping residents informed throughout the project.

Russel Kaye, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise to our Beverley customers in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the community.

“Beverley Minster is an area of historical significance and we’re working closely with the local authority and the Humber Archaeology Partnership to minimise any impact from our works at all times.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
