The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £1.2 million to upgrade the ageing metal gas pipes in the Colne Road and Firth Street area of Huddersfield.

The project, which began on Colne Road on Monday 1 October, is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing 2.5km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

The 60-week project, which has been planned in conjunction with Kirklees Council, will be carried out in phases to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

To enable engineers to carry out the work safely, a road closure is in place at the junction of Chapel Hill and Colne Road from 15 October – 14 December 2018.  Access is being maintained for businesses and residents via Queen Street South and a full signed diversion is in place for road users.

From Colne Road, the essential work will progress towards Queen Street South and then onto Firth Street before completing at Wakefield Road.

The NGN team has been door knocking residents and businesses to talk to them about the work, listen to their concerns and ensure they inform their plans as much as possible.

Chris Nevison, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We know that on one likes roadworks and we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused while we work to upgrade the gas mains in the area.  I’d like to thank customers for their patience while we work to complete the project as quickly as possible.”

NGN will be providing regular updates about the project as it progresses via its website – northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter (@NGNgas) and Facebook/northerngasnetworks
