The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £340k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Newmarket Street, Brougham Street and Otley Road in Skipton.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Skipton and will involve replacing over 1km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

Beginning today (Thursday 24 August), the project is scheduled to be completed by Friday 17 November has been planned in conjunction with North Yorkshire County Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce a number of traffic management measures:

  • From Thursday 24 August to Monday 28 August, there will be four-way temporary traffic signals in place on Newmarket Street at the junction of Otley Road and Brougham Street, which will be manually operated between Monday and Saturday 7am to 6pm.
  • From Tuesday 29 August, two-way temporary traffic signals will be put in place on Brougham Street with priority access for Petyt Grove which will be manually operated from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm.
  • There will also be two-way traffic signals on Brougham Street at the junction of Newmarket Street from Tuesday 29 August until Tuesday 5 September.

Pedestrian, residential and business access will be maintained at all times.

Josh Hampshire, Northern Gas Networks’ Construction Services Area Manager, said: “We have been working closely with North Yorkshire County Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”
