The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks, is investing over £700,000 to replace ageing metal gas mains in Lyon Street, Hebburn.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 3.2km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The 25 week project commenced on Monday 10 August and has been carefully planned in conjunction with South Tyneside Council.

In order to carry out works safely and efficiently one lane on Mill Lane is closed and two-way traffic lights are in place to help control the flow of traffic.

From Monday 21 September, work will progress onto Monkton Lane where there will be temporary three-way traffic lights at the mini roundabout.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the work.

John Richardson, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said:  “We have been working closely with South Tyneside Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise any disruption caused.

“Our Customer Care Officers will be at our customer cabin, located on Monkton Lane, every Wednesday throughout the duration of the project and on hand to answer any questions members of the public may have. You can find more details on our Twitter and Facebook pages.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience this essential work may cause and thank member of the public for their understanding.”

For further information about the project please contact NGN’s Customer Care team on 0800 040 7766, option 7 or email customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
