The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £110k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Domestic Street, Leeds.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Leeds and will involve replacing around 600m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

This project will begin at the junction of Lord St and Whitehall Road East on Monday 10 July and will progress onto A58 Domestic Street. The project is expected to last around nine weeks with an estimated completion date of 8 September. Works have been planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council to ensure the scheme is completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order for engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce two-way temporary traffic lights on Whitehall Road East. These will be manually operated at peak times and in place from Monday 10 July for two weeks.

There will also be a lane closure introduced on the inside lane of Domestic Street for around seven weeks from Monday 17 July. Pedestrian walkways will be provided at all times.

A road closure will then be placed on Domestic Street from the junction of Ingram Gardens to the roundabout at the junction of Domestic Road.  This closure will be introduced from Monday 7 August to Sunday 3 September, with a signed diversion route clearly displayed for all motorists.

NGN’s Customer Care officers have been door-knocking local businesses and residents to update them on progress and provide details of the traffic management plans.

Engineers will be working from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm and NGN will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

Ashley Whitfield, Project Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting the works completed as quickly as possible.”
