The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is celebrating an incredible haul of honours at this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Awards ceremonies.

NGN distributes gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses to cities and towns including Newcastle, Darlington, Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Hull, York and Carlisle. It also provides the region’s rapid response team when a smell of gas is reported.

Construction Services and Major Projects teams celebrate NGN’s 47 honours at this year’s CCS Awards.

NGN Construction Services* and Major Projects teams collected 47 gold, silver and bronze awards** between March 21 – March 23 for sites across the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire.

NGN was the first UK gas distribution network to join the CCS three years ago and recently celebrated the registration of its 100^th CCS site.

Winning the prestigious gold awards were gas mains replacement sites Bentley Avenue in Lepton, Fulbeck Road in Middlesbrough, Castlegate Penrith, Ellwell Avenue Beverley, The Dales in Cottingham and Sigston Road in Hull.

Major Projects collected four gold awards for gas holder removal sites at Ayres Quay, Sunderland, Howdon in Wallsend and Meadow Lane in Leeds, with a pressure reduction station site in Ganstead, East Riding also sweeping to gold.

The Ayres Quay site was also named a Most Considerate Site Runner-up, meaning it will now be judged against 29 other national sites, six of which will be named Most Considerate Site under £500,000.

Thirty-two gas mains replacement sites across Yorkshire and the North East collected silver awards including high-profile schemes such as Wakefield Road in Huddersfield and Skipton Road in Ilkley.

Securing bronze were gas mains replacement projects at Ingleby Moor Crescent in Darlington, Nevilles Cross Bank in Durham, Horbury Road in Wakefield, Cottingham Road Hull and a pressure reduction station upgrade at Low Thornley in Gateshead.

Since 1999, the CCS has been rewarding the UK’s most considerate sites for the contribution they have made towards improving the image of construction.

It looks at the measures a site has put in place to be more considerate towards local neighbourhoods and the public, the workforce and the environment.

All NGN projects scheduled to take more than six weeks to complete are registered with the CCS and NGN is now rolling out CCS principles to all sites, including Emergency & Repair and Connections projects.

This year’s accolades for NGN are even more special when considering the competition, which includes construction giants Balfour Beatty, Kier Construction and Laing O’Rourke.

*Construction Services are responsible for the ongoing gas mains replacement programme, where ageing metal gas mains are replaced with new, more durable plastic pipes to ensure the safe continued and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.
