Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, has been recognised as a ‘Champion Employer’ by Stonewall – the human rights charity which supports the LGBTQ+ community in the UK.

Stonewall supports organisations to foster safe, inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive – and NGN has now received the official accreditation of ‘Champion Employer’ for the first time.

Impactful initiatives

NGN initiatives highlighted by Stonewall as particularly impactful include the colleague LGBTQ+ Allies Community.

This is just one of NGN’s thriving Colleague Communities which help drive positive change across the business.

The LGBTQ+ Allies Community provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ colleagues and actively encourages participation from trans and non-binary colleagues.

Supporting diversity and inclusion

Stonewall complimented the confidential telephone support line which is specific to LGBTQ+ issues. They also recognised good practice in the use of multiple gender marker options and gender neutral titles and how NGN always considers a potential supplier’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

NGN – which delivers gas to 2.9 million homes and businesses across the North of England – has its head office in Leeds, and they’re a proud founding member of the Leeds LGBTQ+ Alliance.

Strong relationships with stakeholders have led to breakthroughs. These include partnering with the charity Northern Pride and Curious Arts to offer LGBTQ+ awareness training for colleagues, including the senior leadership team.

Tangible support for underrepresented groups

Jarred Knott, co-chair of the LGBTQ+ Allies Community, said: “We’re delighted to receive this accreditation.

“It shows how NGN are demonstrating best practice and true commitment to ensuring everyone feels welcome, represented and heard. Ultimately, this is crucial in creating a safe and inclusive work environment for all.

“At NGN, the LGBTQ+ Allies Community is committed to showing tangible, visible support for underrepresented groups. It also gives colleagues the opportunity to share their thoughts in open forums.

“We’re always looking to do more, and will be engaging closely with Stonewall and following their recommendations to make even greater progress as we continue on our inclusion journey.”
