northern gas networks solutions for the planet big ideas final

At Northern Gas Networks (NGN), we’re incredibly proud to be supporting three Yorkshire school teams as they prepare to take their ideas to a national stage at the Big Ideas final.

This week, students from across the UK will gather in Westminster for the National Finals of Solutions for the Planet’s Big Ideas Programme. Three teams from NGN-supported schools will be among them.

Empowering young people to think big

The Big Ideas Programme brings together secondary school students, teachers and industry mentors to tackle some of the biggest environmental and social challenges facing our world.

Throughout the programme, students work in teams to create their own “Big Idea”. This is a practical solution to an issue they care about. They then develop this into a business-style proposal, building confidence and valuable skills in communication, teamwork and problem solving along the way.

As a long-standing regional partner, NGN has supported students throughout their journey, with colleagues volunteering their time to mentor teams, share their experience and help bring ideas to life.

From regional success to the national stage

In May, teams from across the North of England showcased their ideas at the Regional Finals. Teams from various schools presented creative and innovative solutions to real-world sustainability challenges.

Following their success, three teams from NGN-supported schools have secured places in the National Finals on 30 June 2026:

These students will now present their ideas to a panel of judges in Westminster, competing against other top teams from across the UK.

A proud moment for students, schools and mentors

Jenny Wilkinson, our Head of Customer and Stakeholder Strategy, said:

“Reaching this stage is a significant milestone and reflects months of hard work, collaboration and determination from these amazing pupils.

All of the young people involved in the competition have demonstrated teamwork and confidence well beyond their years. We’re delighted that three teams from NGN-supported schools have secured places at the National Finals. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their ideas in front of industry experts and decision makers.”

Why this matters to us

Supporting programmes like Big Ideas is an important part of our commitment to the communities we serve.

By working with young people, we’re helping to:

  • Inspire the next generation
  • Support STEM education and sustainability awareness
  • Showcase the wide range of careers available in the energy sector

It’s not just beneficial for students either. Our colleagues gain valuable mentoring and leadership experience, while making a meaningful impact in local communities.

Programme impact and national recognition

Jen Baughan, CEO at Solutions for the Planet, said: “It’s inspiring to see the creativity, determination and sense of purpose shown by this year’s students, as we’ve seen every year in the Big Ideas Programme for the last 13 years. Reaching the National Finals is a fantastic achievement, and these teams should be incredibly proud of the impact-driven ideas they’ve developed.

The Big Ideas Programme is all about empowering young people to tackle real-world challenges, and with the support of partners like Northern Gas Networks, students are gaining the skills, confidence and belief that their voices matter. We’re very much looking forward to seeing these brilliant teams showcase their ideas on a national stage in Westminster, and we wish them the very best of luck.”

Good luck to our finalists

We’d like to say a huge well done to every student, teacher and school involved in this year’s programme. Taking part requires creativity, confidence and commitment, and every team should be proud of what they’ve achieved.

To our finalist teams, Electroben, 4CL and Monthly Matters – we wish you the very best of luck. We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way as you take your brilliant ideas to Westminster!
