Bradford school pupils put their creative and scientific minds to the ultimate test with the support of Northern Gas Networks (NGN), in an inter-schools challenge to create a Net Zero Island.

NGN ran the competition across the autumn term, in partnership with the University of Bradford, Bechtle, Yorkshire Water, SkillsHouse and City of Bradford Council.

Teams of Year Nine students, aged 13 and 14, developed ideas for sustainable living on a fictional Net Zero island by exploring ways to produce energy for heating and cooking, fuel transport and manage waste and water for a population of 30,000, without creating carbon emissions.

The UK government has set a target of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 as it looks to slow the pace of climate change and minimise its consequences on people, places, businesses, and nature.

Bradford District meanwhile, has set its own more ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon by 2038.

The seven-week contest saw pupils from Eden Boys, Titus Salt, Carlton Bolling, Bradford Academy and two teams from St Bede’s and St Joseph’s schools, take up the challenge before pitching their ideas to the judges in a Dragon’s Den style challenge.

The Dragons panel included NGN’s Rebecca Miller, Ryan Mallinder from N-Gen, Steph Renshaw from Yorkshire Water, James Machell of the University of Bradford, and Barry Cusack of City of Bradford Council.

Carlton Bolling won the competition after presenting ideas for their Net Zero Island, that went into great detail across all areas they were tasked to research, including energy production, waste and water management, housing and transport.

Their use of diagrams and statistics alongside their decision-making and explanations showed a real understanding and passion for the topic.

Judges were also impressed by the importance they put on sustainability, looking at the natural geography of the island and habitat conservation.

As well as collecting a trophy and certificates, Carlton Bolling’s winners secured a trip to visit Yorkshire Water’s Headingley Water Treatment Works and Education Centre

Our Net Zero Educator Rebecca Miller, who was part of the judging panel, said: “What an amazing group of students we have been lucky enough to work with for this project. The research they have done and the presentations they have created are so impressive, I hope this inspires them to continue thinking about what they have learned and help the UK reach our Net Zero targets.”

NGN’s Net Zero Education team have reached over 25,000 school students through their interactive sessions since September 2023.
