Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in York.

The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The work will start on Monday 22nd January and is expected to last for twelve weeks. It has been planned in collaboration with City of York Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some temporary traffic management will be put in place, with some road closures and restricted parking.

During the work, we will need to implement three road closures due to the location of the gas mains; two road closures will be on Skeldergate. These will occur on Skeldergate at the junction of Bridge Street and Micklegate from Monday 19th February five weeks. The second Skeldergate closure will be adjacent to Buckingham Street from Monday 29th July 2024 for two weeks.

Access will be maintained for residents and businesses where possible, and a signed diversion will be in place for motorists.

Buckingham Street will be closed from Monday 18th March for five weeks. During the road closures parking will be restricted and there will be junction closures and traffic lights in place.

Two-way traffic lights will be implemented on Cromwell Road for five weeks starting Monday 22nd January. During the work, junctions leading onto Cromwell Road will be closed.

The junctions leading to Cromwell Road that will be affected are:

Falkland Street from Monday 5th February for 2 weeks

Victor Street from Monday 19th February for 2 weeks

Hampton Street from Monday 26th February for 2 weeks

Fairfax Street from Monday 11th March for 2 weeks

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Scott Kitchingman, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of York.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
