The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now, while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The work will start on Tuesday 30th May and is expected to last for 3 weeks. It has been planned in collaboration with City of York Council.

Temporary traffic management will be put in place to allow engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public.

The inbound lane on Lord Mayor’s Walk will be closed from Monday 12th June to Sunday 18th June and diversion routes will be in place. Penley Grove Street will be reopened as part of the diversion route for light vehicles only. A diversion route will also be in place for HGV’s and larger vehicles around Huntington Road/Haxby Road. All diversion routes will be clearly signed for traffic to follow.

Parking restrictions on Lord Mayor’s Walk will be in place between Tuesday 30th May and Friday 18th June, motorists will need to park elsewhere during this time.

Customers with parking permits for Lord Mayor’s Walk will be allowed to use Monk Bar car park free of charge. Parking enforcement officers will have details of the vehicles with valid parking permits.

Those affected will receive a letter with further information and will be visited by an engineer.

Scott Kitchingman, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. It is vital however, that we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of York.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
