Northern Gas Networks to carry out essential upgrade work to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply in Margaret Creighton Gardens, Melbourne Road, Brook Street and London Road, Carlisle.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is due to begin carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Margaret Creighton Gardens, Melbourne Road, Brook Street and London Road, Carlisle.  Works will commence on the 9th of May.

The ageing metal pipework will be replaced with new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

In order that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be in place during the works.

Due to the nature of the work, 3-way traffic lights will be necessary on London Road, Carlisle (outside St Nicholas retail park). We expect these traffic lights to be in place for 3 weeks. During this time there will also be a 1-way system in place on Brook Street for up to a duration of 6 weeks. Road closures will also be necessary on the junctions of Alexander Street/London Road and Oswald Street/London Road.

Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place.

While most of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties and businesses to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Dan Hind, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. It is vital however, that we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Carlisle.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

All Businesses will be open as usual.

For further information about the work please contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email: customercare@northerngas.co.uk.
