Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers at Bar Lane in Garforth, Leeds.

The ageing medium pressure main is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipe, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The six-week project is due to begin on Bar Lane Thursday 28th July 2022, having been planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council to take place in three phases in order to minimise impact on road users and customers during the summer holidays.

In order for our engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, some traffic management measures will be necessary.

Phase One will see a road closure introduced on Bar Lane, from the junction of Aberford Road to the junction of Montague Crescent.

The closure will be in place from Thursday 28th July until Thursday 4th August, however will only be enforced on weekdays, full access will be available during weekends.

Phase Two will involve a one-way closure on Bar Lane from Thursday 4th August until Thursday 11th August. Motorists will be unable to access Bar Lane from Aberford Road, but will be able to enter and leave from Bar Mount.

Phase Three will involve a road closure starting 11th August on Bar Lane from the junction of Church Lane to the junction of Bar Mount. This will be in place until 31st August and access will only be available for residents during this time.

While the project is underway,  the traffic lights on Aberford Road will be bagged off and temporary lights introduced with a temporary pedestrian crossing in place for approximately three weeks from Thursday 28th July.

In addition to the work at Bar Lane, NGN is also carrying out a six-week upgrade project on Wakefield Road, starting 28th July.

This work will require three-way lights at the junction of Allandale Close, which will change to two-way lights as the works progress on Wakefield Road.

The lights will be monitored at peak time through out the day.

Brad Metcalf, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works.

“However, it is vital we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Garforth.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
