Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers on Newcastle Road in Blyth.

The ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

At the same time Miller and Taylor Wimpey are currently implementing the approved residential development to the west of South Newsham Road, which includes works for the access to the development and improvements to the highway network serving the site and surrounding area.

To carry out these works safely, and to protect engineers and members of the public, there will be a southbound one-way system in place on B1523 Newcastle Road / South Newsham Road from 8th June 2022 for 12 weeks.

The one-way system is being introduced so that each set of works can be carried out at the same time over 12 weeks, rather than requiring two individual sets of multi way traffic lights for both sites, which would have been in place for 26 weeks.

This joint working to reduce disruption has been developed in co-ordination with Northumberland County Council and arrangements are also being put in place with Arriva for bus services to operate using revised routes.

NGN will share any updates if this change is required through as quickly as possible.

Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place.

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Dean Fuller, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Blyth.

“NGN is continuing to carry out its essential activities while following strict guidelines for safe distance working, where possible, and following good hygiene practices as we continue to live with coronavirus.

“ We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
