Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England is carrying out essential upgrade work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Horsforth.

The ageing metallic gas main has undergone several recent repairs, so has now been prioritised for replacement with new, more durable plastic pipes.

The six-week project is under way on Westbrook Lane and is expected to be complete by Friday 17th June 2022, having been planned in collaboration with Leeds City Council.

In order for engineers to carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect members of the public, some traffic management measures will be necessary during the next stage of the project.

From Monday 13th June, a road closure will be placed on Long Row from the junction of Dickinson Street to the junction of Stanhope Avenue for approximately one week.

A clear signposted diversion will be in place during the works, so that motorists can use an alternative route.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual while the work is underway.

While most of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Steve Pigott, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these critical works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Horsforth.

“We want to assure members of the public and road users that we will be working hard to complete this scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

NGN is continuing to carry out its essential activities while following strict guidelines for safe distance working, where possible, and following good hygiene practices as we continue to live with coronavirus.

While all of NGN’s work has now resumed, extra safety precautions remain in place to keep everyone safe while we continue to live with Covid-19.
