Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, is carrying out essential work on Leeds Road in Shipley to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers.

The ageing main has undergone several recent emergency repairs, so has now been prioritised for urgent replacement.

It is being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.

The project, which is taking place near Shipley Train Station and McDonalds, began on 16th March 2022 and was expected to last until 21st April 2022. This however has had to be extended for another three weeks due to the complexity of the engineering work involved.

Work is now planned to end 24th April 2022, having been planned in collaboration with Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

So that engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place.

Manually operated Stop and Go boards will be used between 7am and 7pm, while two-way temporary traffic lights will be used between 7pm and 7am.

Engineers will be on site from 7pm to 10pm and working seven days a week in order to complete the project as quickly as possible.

Signs have been displayed for motorists since February and will remain in place till the work is completed.

The majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will not need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Chris Nevison, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Shipley and the surrounding area.

“NGN is continuing to carry out its essential activities while following strict guidelines for safe distance working, where possible, and following good hygiene practices as we continue to live with coronavirus.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
While all of NGN’s work has now resumed, extra safety precautions remain in place to keep everyone safe while we continue to live with Covid-19.
