Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distributor for the North of England, will continue its programme of investment in Hull’s gas infrastructure from 12th July, with the next stage of essential upgrade works at Spring Bank West.
NGN is investing £200k in the project, which is one of several city centre schemes being completed over the next four months, having been planned in close collaboration with Hull City Council.
Engineers will continue replacing over a kilometre of ageing metallic mains on Spring Bank West from Monday 12th July, starting at the junction of Lomond Road and progressing eastwards towards the Walton Street railway crossing. The entire project is expected to be completed in December 2021.
The old main is being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply for Hull customers, and futureproof the network for another 100 years.
The majority of work in this next stage at Spring Bank West will be taking place in the footpath rather that the highway, in order to minimise impact on motorists travelling in and out of the city.
Temporary footpaths will be put in place for pedestrians during that time.
To ensure the safety of colleagues, customers and the community, most of the work will be carried out in the street, following Government guidelines for safe distance working wherever possible. There are also extra safety measures in place to keep everyone safe and ensure that the work is Covid 19 secure.
Impacted customers will be sent advance notification letters ahead of the project’s start date, and NGN’s Customer Care team will be on site to provide information and answer any questions.
Further stages of the project will continue on Spring Bank West throughout the autumn, and NGN will supply further detail when dates are finalised with Hull City Council.
Progress updates throughout the works will also be provided on Twitter at @NGNgas and Facebook/northerngasnetworks.
Russel Kaye, Business Operations Lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works and thank customers for their patience while the works take place. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Hull.
“This is an important project that’s part of a wider investment in the city’s gas infrastructure, futureproofing the network for years to come to ensure Hull customers continue to stay safe and warm.
“The level of impact on road users will be very much reduced compared to last month’s works on Spring Bank West, as we are digging in the footpath for this next stage, not the highway.“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this scheme as safely and as quickly as possible and doing our utmost to minimise any disruption.”
As well as NGN’s critical service (which include responding to gas emergencies, carrying out emergency repairs and critical maintenance activities) engineers are continuing to carry out work to upgrade critical infrastructure, including planned work to replace ageing metal gas pipes, where most of the work can be carried out safely in the street.
While working outside, our engineers will follow Government guidelines for social distance as much as possible. There are also extra safety measures in place to keep everyone safe and ensure that the work is Covid 19 secure.
Engineers will only request entry to a customer’s property if it is absolutely necessary; in order to ensure their safety, to keep the gas supply flowing, or at a customer’s request. Customers can read more about our Covid Secure Promise here.
