Hundreds of pounds worth of cash prizes for children and schools to be won

The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is encouraging primary schools and any children aged five to 11 to enter a competition showing their knowledge about the dangers of Carbon Monoxide (CO). Competition winners could earn cash prizes for themselves and their school or community group.

NGN is running the competition to encourage school-aged children to learn about the symptoms and dangers of CO, and about how families can keep themselves safe by knowing the signs of CO poisoning and fitting a CO alarm.

CO is often called the silent killer because it cannot be seen, tasted, smelled or heard, but CO poisoning is responsible for around 40 UK deaths and 200 hospital visits each year. It is caused by incomplete burning of fossil fuels and can cause symptoms including headaches, dizziness, nausea or lack of energy.

The regional round of the competition is open until Wednesday 30th June 2021 and children can show off their creative skills by submitting an entry, which could be:

  • Eye-catching cartoons and videos
  • Models made with materials such as paper or plasticine
  • Short stories or poems
  • Leading assemblies at school or your local Cubs or Brownie group
  • Making a fact sheet to share with your family and virtually with friends

As long as you are spreading awareness of carbon monoxide, anything counts!

The regional competition will see a winner from Key Stage 1 and 2 from within the NGN network, who will receive £150 for themselves and £300 for their school or organisation.

Each network winner will then go forward to a national competition where they have a chance to win a further £300 for themselves and £600 for their school or organisation*.

All entries must be received by the closing date and judging will take place by the end June and all winners will be notified by email.Entries should be sent along with a name, age, teacher, school/organisation and post code by email* to COSafetyCompetition@energynetworks.org

Entries must be in the format of a JPEG, photograph or coloured scan, or as a link or attachment if it is in video or digital form.

Please submit each entry individually with only one entry per student permitted. Submissions received by other means will not be entered into the competition.

The closing date for entries is midnight on 30th June. Terms and Conditions apply

Steve Dacre, Vulnerability Innovations Lead at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Gas safety is an incredibly important topic and we’re passionate about teaching young people more about how they can identify the dangers.

“It’s important that we engage with children in a way that is interactive and enjoyable, and the competition is a fantastic way for us to do this. We’re really looking forward to seeing the creative entries that come through!”
