The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £77K to upgrade to the gas distribution network in the Leeds Road area of Hipperholme, West Yorkshire. The project is set to begin on Monday 2 November and take five weeks to complete.

The project will involve the replacement of the ageing metal pipework with new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for many years to come.

To make sure that customers, colleagues and the community are all kept safe, the work will be carried out in the street. There are also extra measures in place for safe distance working, to keep everyone safe and ensure that the project is Covid-19 secure.

Due to the complexity of the engineering works involved, and to ensure the safety of our teams and members of the public during the project, it will be necessary to introduce the following traffic management while we complete this scheme. To minimise disruption for drivers, we will also carry out the work in four phases.

  • Phase One will start on Monday 2 November, and finish on Wednesday 11 November. Work will start on Roydlands Street, just off the A58 Leeds Road, where a new gas main will be laid. The street will stay open through the works;
  • Phase Two will start on Saturday 7 November and finish on Wednesday 11 November.

Temporary two-way traffic lights will be put up first thing on the Saturday morning at the junction of Wakefield Road and Roydlands Street.  Our team will work through the weekend while the roads are quieter. To maintain the flow of traffic the lights will be manned between 7am until 7pm daily;

  • Phase Three will start on Wednesday 11 November and finish on Wednesday 4 December. The bus stop and the bus bay at the top of Wakefield Road will be suspended on the corner opposite the Tesco Express car park, and
  • The last phase of the works will start on Friday 13 November and finish on Friday 4 November. Work to start on Leeds Road, at the junction with Roydlands Terrace. The parking spaces for residents of Roydlands Terrace/Leeds Road will be closed to create a space working space and maintain the flow of traffic on Leeds Road. Additional parking will be provided for the residents of Roydlands Terrace.

It’s expected that journey times will be longer, so all motorists and commuters are advised to leave extra time for travel.

Chris Nevison, Business Operations Lead at Northern Gas Networks, said: “After safety, minimising the impact of road works on our customers is our top priority.

“We have worked closely with Calderdale Council and residents to plan these works. We would like to thank all our customers for their patience whilst we carry out this essential project and apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause as we look to complete them as safely and quickly as possible. All our engineers will adhere to a Covid-19 risk assessment and distance working guidance while carrying out this essential work’’.
