The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £220,000 to upgrade the gas distribution network in the Tadcaster Road area of York.

The project, underway this week (w/c 5th October)  is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the gas infrastructure in the area to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

Work is expected to be carried out in the area for 20 weeks altogether, starting on Tadcaster Road for the first 12 weeks, with work in the remaining weeks to be carried out on smaller residential roads. More than 2km of old gas mains will be replaced.

To ensure the work is carried out safely and efficiently,  a lane closure is necessary on Tadcaster Road. Motorists will be diverted onto the bus route to maintain the route into the cite centre and are advised to leave extra time for travel.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual while the work is underway.

David Smales, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “This investment will ensure homes and businesses in York have a safe and reliable gas supply for decades to come.

“We appreciate that nobody likes roadworks, but our engineers will be working hard to complete this scheme as quickly as possible, while maintaining the highest safety standards.”

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local residents and businesses to make customers aware of the work, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place. Regular updates will also be available on NGN’s website northerngasnetworks.co.uk, Twitter @NGNgas and Facebook @northerngasnetworks.
