The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £100K to upgrade to the gas distribution network in the Meltham Road area of Lockwood.

The works are set to begin on Monday, 2nd March and will take approximately six weeks to complete, having been planned in close conjunction with Kirklees Council.

The project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing 300m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

To protect members of the public and NGN engineers, some traffic management will be necessary during the scheme.

The existing four-way traffic lights at the junction of Meltham Road, Swan Lane, Bridge Street and Lockwood Road will be replaced with temporary traffic lights.  These will be manned at peak times to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

Works will continue from the junction working up Meltham Road towards the viaduct bridge. The four-way lights will become two-way traffic lights once teams have reached a safe distance from the junction.

Road closures will also be introduced at the junction of Meltham Road with Neil Road, Bentley Street and Hanson Lane for the full duration of the project. A full signed diversion will be in place for the affected roads.

NGN Customer Care officers will be on site to assist local residents and businesses affected by the works throughout the project.

Chris Nevison, NGN Business Operations Lead for Pennines, said: “We would like to thank all our customers for their patience whilst we complete these essential works. We apologise for any inconvenience customers may experience during this time’’.
