The North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £70k to upgrade the gas distribution network in the Mill Street West area of Dewsbury.

The project will begin on Monday, 19 August and is expected to last approximately five weeks, having been planned in close conjunction with Kirklees Council.

The scheme involves replacing 200 metres of ageing metallic gas main with new, more durable plastic pipes. This is to ensure the safe, continued and reliable supply of gas to customers in Dewsbury for years to come.

To protect our teams and members of the public during the work, it will be necessary to introduce the following traffic management.

A partial road closure will be introduced at Mill Street West from 19 August until 22 September.

Traffic will not be able to enter Mill Street West from Savile Road or by crossing from Mill Street East, however motorists will be able to exit Mill Street West as normal.
A full signed diversion will be in place during this time.

It’s expected that journey times will be increased because of the traffic management, so all motorists and commuters are advised to leave extra time for travel.

NGN’s Customer Care team will be on site throughout to provide updates to affected businesses and residents. Further updates will be provided throughout the scheme.

Updates will also be posted on Facebook/northerngasnetworks and @NGNgas as well as Kirklees Council’s channels.

Chris Nevison, NGN Business Operations Lead for Pennines, said:  “After safety, minimising the impact of road works on our customers is our top priority, and we have worked closely with Kirklees Council to plan these works.

“We understand how town centre works have a major impact on road users, and because of this we have utilised the school summer holidays to carry out the work, in order to minimise impact on traffic.

“We’d like to thank all our customers for their patience whilst we carry out this essential project, and apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause as we look to complete them as safely and quickly as possible.’’
