The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £632,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas distribution network in Crossgates, Leeds.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 5km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes. This is to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Crossgates for years to come.

The project began on Monday 26th June and is scheduled to last approximately 36 weeks.

All works have been planned in close conjunction with Leeds City Council to minimise disruption to customers.

In order to protect NGN engineers and members of the public during the works, some traffic management will be introduced at various stages of the project.

Two-way temporary traffic signals will be put in place on Chapel Street at the junction of Pinfold Lane from Monday 29th July 2019, for approximately three weeks.

As works progress on Chapel Street, three-way temporary traffic signals will also be placed at the junction of Selby Road from Monday 19th August 2019. In order to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, these will be manually operated during peak times.

In addition, it will be necessary to suspend parking on Chapel Street and Irwin Approach at various stages throughout the essential work.  Suspended parking will be staggered throughout the project to minimise any inconvenience caused.

It’s expected that there will be some delays to bus services during works taking place on Chapel Street. All bus companies have been notified of the works and will be kept informed throughout.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and NGN engineers will be working Monday – Friday between 8am and 5pm.

Matty McBride, Business Operations Lead at Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan the majority of these works in order to minimise any disruption caused.

We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting these works completed as quickly as possible.”
