The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is celebrating a top award for fleet sustainability and low emission transport.

Mark Squires, NGN’s Commercial Fleet Manager, was named Private Sector Fleet Manager of the Year at the 2018 Green Fleet Awards, held this November at Elland Road in Leeds.

The awards highlight industry excellence in the drive towards cleaner, greener vehicles for business.

As the gas distributer for the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, NGN’s fleet performs an essential role in maintaining a safe and reliable gas network for around 2.7 million homes and businesses.

As NGN fleet manager, Mark has championed the low/zero emission agenda within the business and also externally, by encouraging manufacturers to accelerate progress across the Light Commercial Vehicle sector.

He has also overseen the introduction of compressed natural gas vans,a hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai and worked with key manufacturers on the development of full electric 3,500kg vehicles for industry.

“Minimising the environmental impact of a large operational fleet is a top priority for NGN, and that begins by encouraging awareness, uptake and adoption of low and zero emission vehicles within the business” said Mark.

“Working directly with manufacturers means we’re able to action change faster and demonstrate that there is a market for cleaner, greener vehicles in large fleets which can deliver huge benefits, in terms of air quality and the environment.”

Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
