Due to the severe weather across parts of our region, the North of England’s gas distributor, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is advising customers of the correct numbers to call should they have an issue with their gas supply, boiler or appliances.

The advice is being issued to help customers to get back on gas as quickly as possible and stay safe and warm.

If you smell gas, have a gas leak or suspect carbon monoxide please call the National Gas Emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.

If you have an issue with your gas boiler or any other gas appliance, please call a Gas Safe registered engineer or contact your gas supplier. To find a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area call 0800 408 5500 or visit: www.gassaferegister.co.uk/find-an-engineer

If you have home care cover with your gas supplier please contact them directly.

Cold weather often causes gas pipes to freeze. If your boiler condensate pipes have frozen you should:

  • Hold a hot water bottle, or heat wrap, around the pipe
  • Alternatively, pour hot, NOT boiling, water over the frozen end of the pipe
  • If the boiler fires up, it’s fixed. If it doesn’t then pour hot water on the pipe again. If your pipes are still frozen, please call your supplier

Ian Waddle, Head of Customer Operations at Northern Gas Networks, said: “Our engineers have been working around the clock to keep customers safe and warm at this bitterly cold time. However, contacting the right number is really important, so that issues can be dealt with by the right team as quickly as possible.

“If customers smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide (CO) or have a gas leak they need to call the National Gas Emergency number immediately – 0800 111 999. If you experience an issue with your boiler, internal pipework or gas appliances, you must contact your gas supplier or a Gas Safe registered engineer as our engineers are not qualified to carry out this work. Their priority is to make the situation safe in the event of a gas emergency.”

If you smell gas, have a gas leak, or suspect carbon monoxide please call 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
