The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £30,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas distribution network in Acomb Road, York.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 71m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which began on Monday 26 September and will last around three weeks, has been planned in conjunction with City of York Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

In order to complete the works safely and efficiently, some traffic management measures will be necessary.  There will be three-way temporary traffic lights in place on Acomb Road from the junction of Acomb Road, Poppleton Road and Holgate Bridge Road. These lights will remain in situ for the full duration of the project and will be manually operated between the hours of 8am and 6pm.

There may be a need for existing bus stops to be suspended and replaced with temporary stands throughout the scheme, however bus companies have been advised of this and all stands will be clearly signed and displayed should the suspensions be necessary.

Engineers will be working from Monday to Sunday between 8am and 5pm, and safe pedestrian access will be available at all times.

Robert Hope, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with City of York Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”
