The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £16,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in North Street, Wetherby.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 40m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The scheme, which will begin on Monday 15 August and last approximately two weeks with an estimated completion date of 26 August, has been planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

Work will begin on Monday 15 August on North Street at the junction of Horsefair before progressing on to Bank Street where a small section will be completed.

In order to complete the project as safely and efficiently as possible, it will be necessary to introduce a road closure on Horsefair to the junction of North Street. This will be in place from 16 August to 26 August. A diversion route will be signed and displayed for all motorists.

Due to engineering works, parking bays outside of properties 2-8 North Street will be to be temporarily suspended for the duration of the works.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and engineers will be working Monday to Sunday between 8am and 5pm.

Russ Oxley, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works during the school holidays in order to minimise any disruption caused.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and would like to thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”
