Although our name isn’t at the top of the bill, we never forget that around 17% of an average gas bill pays for the distribution service we provide. We’ve made some smart calls which have saved money without compromising quality. For example, we’ve outsourced the maintenance contract for all our above-ground equipment, reducing costs by 10%, and have set up a commercial team to scrutinise what we spend and why. We’ve developed fantastic relationships with local engineering firms, who now carry out all our mains replacement work – saving money while driving up quality. Use of new technology is helping us to reduce the duration and cost of jobs out on the streets and in our offices. And more than 60% of colleagues are on modern terms and conditions, which have replaced the old ‘clock on, clock off’ mentality with the opportunity to earn more through productivity.
