Important information: Potential delay to your meter installation

Between 19 May and 6 June, it may take longer than usual to arrange the meter installation with your gas supplier. This is because of an Ofgem initiative to replace the IT systems used across the UK gas market. It involves all gas suppliers and will ultimately make it easier for you to switch supplier and/or get a smart meter. You can find more information about Project Nexus on Ofgem’s website.

Environment

We are committed to transporting gas from our network to our customers’ homes with a minimum of environmental impact, and supporting the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy by harnessing new forms of green energy.

One of the most effective ways in which we can reduce carbon emissions is by reducing pipe leakage. Natural gas contains large quantities of methane, which, when it escapes into the atmosphere, contributes to the build up of greenhouse gases.

Since 2005, we have reduced leakage on our pipes by more than 10%, through our ongoing mains replacement programme, and by managing gas escapes promptly. By 2021, we aim to have reduced gas leakage on our network by 18% – saving around 500,000 tonnes of carbon equivalent.

Our green fleet initiative is helping to improve fuel efficiencies and reducing our carbon footprint.  We have introduced new Greenroad technology to manage and improve driver behaviours and equipped our drivers with tyre pressure gauges to minimise resistance on the road, as well as installing speed limiters to fleet vehicles to help manage fuel consumption.

We also aim to reduce our use of virgin quarried aggregate to 15% by 2021 and reduce the amount of excavated spoil we send to landfill to less than 8%.

To help us get there, we’re committed to improving awareness and understanding of sustainability across the whole business and our supply chain, utilising new technology and ensuring that environmental considerations are part of every new contract award.

Green gas

We are big supporters of the use of biomethane – a sustainable fuel produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter.  We’re working with prospective producers to help them understand the commercial opportunities for them to inject green gas into our grid.  Visit our dedicated Biomethane site to find out more about the services we offer.
