The project will be carried out by engineers from Morgan Sindall on behalf of the area's gas pipeline owner.
Teams will work on a 1km stretch of York Road between its junctions with Holly Tree Lane and Farmstead Drive, progressing in 150m sections.
The £100k pipe replacement scheme will benefit hundreds of gas customers in Haxby by ensuring the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to their area for decades to come as the new plastic pipe being laid is more reliable.
In order to carry out the work safely two-way temporary traffic lights will be in operation on York Road to allow traffic to safely pass the works. When engineers reach the junction with Holy Tree Lane three-way lights will be in operation for around two weeks.
A customer liaison officer has been assigned to the project and will visit residents affected by the works to ensure that they are kept informed and understand the long-term benefits the project will bring.
Northern Gas Networks' Gordon Thompson said: "We know this is a sensitive location and have taken this into account when planning the works which has been carried out in close consultation with the City of York Council highway department.
"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience our work may cause but it is essential to maintaining a safe and secure supply of gas to the area.
"Once the work is complete, we won't need to come back for some time. The new plastic pipe we are laying is very durable and, if undisturbed, will require little or no maintenance over its expected lifespan of around 80 years."
