Gas works for Falsgrave Road, Scarborough

Road-users are being advised to allow a little extra time for journeys in the Falsgrave Road area of Scarborough as Northern Gas Networks starts work to upgrade a short section of gas main.

The area's gas pipeline owner needs to replace around 110m of pipe on Falsgrave Road between its junctions with St Johns Road and Acworth Street in order to ensure the safety and reliability of gas supplies to the area.

Work is due to start on 13th October and is expected to be complete shortly before Christmas.

The project has been carefully planned with North Yorkshire County Council, which is responsible for co-ordinating all street works in Scarborough.

The project will be carried out by engineers from Morgan Sindall on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.

In order to carry out the work safely four-way temporary traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Seamer Road and Falsgrave Road while engineers are working on the junction itself.

Northern Gas Networks would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced but it is vital that the work takes place. By replacing the ageing metal gas mains along this stretch with a more durable plastic version it will help ensure a safe supply of gas for decades to come.
Area Operations Manager Tony Thompson said: "This project has been planned very carefully and it is our priority to carry out the work as quickly and safely as possible with minimum disruption.

"This year, Northern Gas Networks is investing £63 million to renew gas mains and ensure that the north's gas supply system remains one of the safest in the world.

"We use modern technology wherever possible to cut the number of excavations we make. In addition, the new pipes we are putting in are more durable and flexible with an expected lifespan of around 80 years."
