Gas customers in Beverley are to benefit from an upgrade to the town's network of underground gas mains thanks to an £847,000 investment by the area's gas pipeline owner.
Northern Gas Networks is replacing around 7.5km of old gas pipes in Beverley with a hard-wearing plastic version to protect the long-term safety and reliability of supplies.
2.4km of gas mains will be upgraded in the St Leonards Road area and 5.1km in the Grovehill Road area. Both projects are underway and will be completed by mid-October.
The work is being carried out by engineers from Morgan Sindall on behalf of the gas distributor.
The project is part of Northern Gas Networks' £63 million annual investment programme designed to enhance the safety and reliability of the gas network across the north of England by replacing all metal gas pipes within 30 metres of property within 30 years.
In Hull and the East Riding, Northern Gas Networks is investing £5.5 million this year alone, Area Operations Manager Tony Thompson said: "This is the largest project we've ever undertaken in Beverley. It represents a major investment in the town and is crucial to ensuring that we continue to provide a reliable and safe supply of gas to our customers."
Tony added: "Once the work is complete, we won't need to come back for some time. The new plastic pipe we are laying is very durable and, if undisturbed, will require little or no maintenance over its expected lifespan of around 80 years."
The project will benefit mainly residential streets and is not expected to cause any disruption to road-users.
Gas customers will be notified by letter prior to work starting in their street. Senior engineers will also be available on-site to provide regular updates to customers as the work progresses.
