£640k for a trio of Leeds gas upgrades

Northern Gas Networks is pumping around £640,000 into a trio of gas mains investment projects that are due to get underway across Leeds next week.

Yorkshire's gas pipeline owner will replace almost 6km of ageing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipe in three separate projects in: Kirkstall, Bramhope and Pudsey.

All the work will be carried out by engineers from Enterprise on behalf of the region's gas company.

The largest scheme will see around 2.3km of old pipes replaced in Bramhope on: North Drive, Parklands Gate, Parklands, Wyncroft Grove, Wyncroft Avenue, Wynmore Crescent and Wynmore Drive.

In Kirkstall, around 1.9km of old mains will be upgraded on: Kepstorn Close, Queenswood Drive, Queenswood Green, Woodbridge Crescent and Woodbridge Gardens.

While in Pudsey, 1.5km of old pipe will be replaced on: Upper Carr Lane, Brookleigh, Carr Hill Road, Foxholes Lane, Hollin Park Drive, Hollin Park Road, Monson Avenue, Parkwood Gardens and Parkwood Road.

All three projects are taking place in residential areas and are not expected to cause any issues for road-users.

Customers affected by the work have been contacted by letter to advise them about the scheme and its benefits.
Tony Thompson is an Area Operations Manager at the gas company, he said everything possible would be done to keep disruption to a minimum during this essential work.

"We will do everything we can to ensure this project goes smoothly, it has been carefully planned to ensure that we can get in and out as quickly and safely as possible" ,he said.
"This year Northern Gas Networks will invest £63 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world.”

"The good news is that we will be using up-to-date technology to reduce the amount of excavations needed and our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of around 80 years.”
