The Gas distributor for the North of England

Gas Company Thank-you for 'Bearing With Us'

Gas bosses are thanking people in York for bearing with them during vital gas works on Carr Lane, Acomb.

The work, to repair a leaking gas pipe, started on 2 February. Northern Gas Networks assigned engineers to work seven days a week in order to complete the urgent repair as quickly and safely as possible.

In order to do this, a short section of Carr Road, close to its junction with the A59/Borougbridge Road has been closed to through traffic.

The north's gas pipeline owner now expects to be able to re-open the road tomorrow evening (25 February).

Network Director, Martin Alderson, apologised for any inconvenience experienced and explained that it was a very complex job, "the leaking gas main was located deep under ground which meant metal plates had to be installed on the walls of our excavation to stop it caving in. We also had to bring in a specialist team to carry out certain parts of the repair. All this took time but we never take chances with gas safety and always do the job right.

"The repair to the gas main is now complete and the road is being reinstated but we'll need to leave our barriers up for a while to allow the surface to harden sufficiently before allowing vehicles back on it.

"We worked closely with the City of York Council’s highways department on this project to ensure that disruption was kept to a minimum wherever possible.”

Northern Gas Networks operates the area's gas emergency response service and responds to calls of gas escapes 365 days a year free of charge. if you think you smell gas you should immediately call 0800 111 999.
