Gas engineers from United Utilities will carry out the work on Brunton Lane, near Kingston Park shopping centre, on Sundays only until the beginning of March. Manned traffic lights will be in use.
The complex project is vital to make sure gas supplies to homes and businesses in Kingston Park remain safe and reliable for decades to come.
Network officer Brian Featherstone said the scheme would last five weeks but roadworks would be limited to Sundays to minimise the effect on traffic.
There will also be no work in the road on Sunday February 19 to allow a Newcastle Falcons rugby match to take place at Kingston Park Stadium.
“Although some disruption is inevitable, we hope by working closely with highways officials, local businesses and police we can keep it to a minimum,” he said.
